Celebrate Diversity

Last week I took full advantage of a beautiful summer afternoon to go for a jog around my neighborhood.  As I passed by neighbors waving and children playing, I was overcome with gratitude.  I felt grateful for the safe, vibrant, and diverse community that I call home.  I am surrounded by neighbors varying in their type of family, their backgrounds, and ethnicities.  Over the years I’ve made an effort to get to know these families because I understand the importance of these relationships.  This month, in particular, I’ve learned about Ramadan, Native American Citizenship Day, Pride Month, and Freedom Day (Juneteenth).  The brief lessons that I’ve learned from my friends and neighbors have helped me feel more connected with them.  Our connection builds trust and that trust helps to establish a strong community.

Whether I realize it or not, each family in my neighborhood has a role.  They contribute in different ways.  Some help to organize events at the nearby park, some take great pride in the pristine yards they maintain, and nearly all make a point to acknowledge a passerby.  These contributions help this community grow into the surrounding areas, welcoming new families every year.

How might me we see the importance of diversity in other areas of our lives?

In the investment world, diversification refers to a portfolio strategy combining a variety of assets to reduce the overall risk of an investment portfolio.

I see this same principal in action around my neighborhood.  I introduce myself to my neighbors to increase my awareness and reduce the risk of any potential criminal activity.  I’m sure you’ve heard of, or participate in, a neighborhood watch program.  This idea of bringing the neighbors together can help to open the lines of communication and increase community involvement.

In the financial industry, managing a client’s risk is a very important part of building a strong portfolio.  At IAG Wealth Partners, we are fortunate to be able to offer a variety of different investment vehicles to suit your individual needs and risk tolerance.  Get to know the varied funds in your portfolio to better understand their role in mitigating risk.  If you are unsure of the purpose of certain funds, don’t hesitate to contact IAG Wealth Partners for guidance.  Our experienced team of advisors would be happy to help you understand the importance of a diversified portfolio.

As for me, I will continue to cultivate and nurture the relationships I’ve established with my neighbors.  I will embrace their differences, share my own experiences, and in the end reap the rewards.  So let’s celebrate diversity this month – in our communities and in our portfolios.
